Jim Pinkerton This is What They Really Think

It’s probably obvious by now, and nothing should shock me anymore, but this does. It’s a direct quote from the Fox News show “News Watch”. Every Saturday, four conservative pundits and one “liberal” (i.e., a person who is sane and possessing common sense) pundit get together for 23 minutes and discuss news coverage of the week. Yesterday they were talking about the leaked bank information story and how the leak affects the war on terror, if at all. The conservative position is usually that all leaks negatively affect our war efforts. Neil Gabler is the token liberal on the show who does his best every week to stand up for our constitutional rights, with varying success. This is an exchange from yesterday’s show, verbatim:

Jim Pinkerton: It is yet to be shown that we can win a war against an adversary with this media climate and culture in terms of reportage; what can be leaked, what can be revealed.
Eric Burns: Quickly. Do you fault the media for this?
Cal Thomas: Yes, say -
JP: If we lose, if we lose the war, that would be bad.
Neil Gabler: But what if we lose our civil liberties?
JP: Well I’d rather, I’d rather lose our civil liberties than lose the war.
CT: Amen.

Now we know for sure that this is how they think. They seemed to operate under the ridiculous assumption that terrorists had no idea that we were tracking their financial transactions, and now that our secret is blown, the whole war is at risk of being lost. Nevermind the issue of loss of privacy for American citizens.

The question is, if we lose our civil liberties, what is anyone fighting for?
